This film was so much better than I ever expected it to be! Although in hindsight it’s directed by Joss Whedon, and everything he touches is gold so I shouldn’t have been so surprised :P

I loved that the first half was dedicated to building up the formation of the Avengers, with plenty of character development and, importantly, building up the dynamics between characters. A wonderful opportunity for some great lines from each character, as well as some great acting. In a technical sense, the 3D was perfect, all action shots were the perfect speed so they avoided that irritating blur effect that occurs all too often with films of this nature. Also the Hulk was wonderfully rendered and fit right in with the human characters.

I also loved that the action scenes were so slick and well edited, there was no jumpiness or time-space confusion with the action but it was still believable (in a well-they-are-superheroes kind of way…)

Verdict: Some wonderful writing, plenty of laughs and a movie that in general didn’t take itself too seriously and was definitely aimed at fans of the original comics.

PS. I am a massive fangirl and very easily lose myself in fantastical premises so my opinion is super-biased. Also I went to the midnight screening and the whole theatre was basically fanboy and girl/comic/superhero/action movie nerd central so they laughed at all the jokes, clapped each character’s entrance at the beginning as well as the titles and showed their appreciation for all the awesome bits of the movie (including a guy who audibly groaned at the sight of Gwyneth Paltrow’s stunning legs), which definitely made the experience way better. Oh and some guy dressed up as The Cap and is now my future husband, although he doesn’t know that yet…
